OUR CLIMATE, OUR FUTURE

Mercy Adeola ADEYEMO

I am Mercy Adeola ADEYEMO, a third year law student at the University of Ibadan from a very humble background. As an aspiring lawyer who is passionate about advancing justice for the greater good of the society, I have a keen interest for Environmental Law, Family Law and Health Law. These areas of law align with my interest in SDGs 4 (Quality Education) and 13 (Climate Action). Considering particularly, my interest in climate action and advocacy, I have volunteered for two campus clean up drives and a plastic-free awareness initiative. I was also a part of the Green Institute Fellowship class of 2024, where I got to learn more about climate change. As a member and Health editor of The Law Press Organization, I wrote an article on making for a plastic-free environment in the University of Ibadan to further enlighten the community about the harmful effect of plastics and how best to reduce, reuse and recycle them. All these show my interest to contribute my quota to restoring the goodness that a better climate brings.

My poem, in its beginning paragraphs, underscores the state of our climate at the moment. It uses imagery to describe the problem of tree felling, water pollution, burning and so on leading to effects such as flooding/erosion (where Mr. Soil cries, help!), death of marine creatures (where the ocean cries, doom!) and the scorching of the sun.

It further goes on, to resonate hope in restoration which can only be done by man, who is a major player in doing actions that are capable of negatively or positively impacting the climate.
